So starting on the first of next month, we'll gonna be featuring a monthly art installment.. these will be four to six pieces from the selected artist of the month. The art itself can and will be in multiple formats so anything goes. The first installment is gonna come from long time ripper/artist, Doug Korfhagen. Dougs art, along with his skateboarding have inspired us for years, so we re proud to have Doug on board and look forward to seeing what he has cooked up this time. We will be doing some remodeling (painting) in the next few days but will stay open for business (regular hours) all interested artists should email galaxieskateshop@hotmail.com for info and scheduling. I just saw this photo of Glen Hammerle snapping cincinnati's leap of faith, over at Ben Clemens blog Cincinnatiscum. It brought to my attention just how fast time goes by. It seems like yesterday i was jumping over the same shit. These photos are thirteen years apart, and thats longer than most of the readers here have been skating. Skateboarding has gone through many changes and fads, but theres one thing that will never change about skateboarding, its the feeling of Adrenalin when you re trying something that you know you re either gonna make it or get broke. Im talking about that split second that you cant even remember once your rolling away. Kids have always asked me what it takes to get hooked up, sponsored or whatever.....I never knew the answer. My homie Alex summed it up the best when he said "you gotta scare yourself" So big ups to all the skaters out there putting it on the line....get out there and get YOURS, the time is NOW.

First, the new hours are Monday thru Friday 2PM to 7PM. Saturday is gonna be 10AM til 7PM. and finally Sunday is gonna be 12PM to 5PM......I realize its gonna take a while for everyone to remember this. We re gonna go by the old hours until Monday january 10th. Second, the look of the place will be changing a little bit. Nothing major tho. yes its true, Galaxie has changed ownership. Dont get scared though, its in good hands and will be getting tons of new stuff constantly. Tomorow we'll have some Habitat shoes coming in, as well as new wood. We also be carrying everything Instrument. (duh) In honor of our re opening we will be offering ten percent off all Decks and hard goods, fifteen percent off shoes (not including sale shoes.) and twenty percent off all soft goods. The Christmas tree is up, and a blank canvas for your decorating pleasure. Decorating this tree will be a community effort. Bring whatever you can muster to the shop between now and Christmas for the tree. Maybe it's something you find. Maybe it's something you made. Whatever it is, it is more than welcome. And if you currently feel tethered to another shop because of some fake team they have put you on or something to that effect, still come down with an ornament. I promise not to make you buy anything and I am prepared to write a note for you to take back to your superiors explaining your non-capitalistic involvement. I would hate to cause any fake drama for your fake team before your big non-existent demo.

Sort of out of character but I am going to try and make this brief. Clam Chowder Day is this Friday. As in Tomorrow. I have been out of my mind busy as of late but the show must go on. As most of you know, when I get shoes in the good sizes get snagged up real fast. If you wear a 9 or 9.5 get a move on. Also as you know its kind of hard for non big box stores to have door buster sales. Its kind of just another day with business as usual for us that dont advertise in the newspaper. BUT............. Ramp Jam, Bank Ramp and New Videos!!

First the business. Because I know how much people love to purchase skate videos at full retail price from their respective establishments, I have just recently purchased a few for your enjoyment. Some of the titles include, but are not limited to, Lenz (Japanese), In Search Of The Miraculous, Dialogue Between Insiders (Japanese), Blood Wizard (Not Japanese) and Krooked 3D. So if you are finally tired of watching the copy of the new Emerica commercial you either illegally downloaded or got burnt from me, you may want to give these a shot.

RAMP JAM TOMORROW OCT 30! Starts at dark. Jap and some other of your favorite local lovables have decided to have a Halloween Ramp Jam again this year. Costumes are optional but strongly encouraged. They even went through the trouble of patching some new surface together for some of the bad spots to help you not kill yourself. Sooooooo....... If you are into hanging out with a bunch of under-aged kids under an overpass, listening to really bad 80s dance and 90s hip hop, and wishing the 13 or maybe 30-year-old pregnant girl next to you would stop hitting you up for a sip of your dew, then come on down. As much as this situation is available to me on a daily basis, I look forward to this all year. Oh... and leave your mustache combs at home. Word on the street is that Steven will not be dressing like a girl this year. Sorry fellas. :(

New bank under bridge to be celebrated. Roy, James and others I don't know so well have very kindly decided to try their hand at the concrete game under the bridge. A bank was constructed for our community's greater good. Their drive is an inspiration. I'm only sorry I don't have all of the names of everyone that helped. This is what I have been ranting about in the shop for the last three years. You know when you just want to come in and buy a board and I go on and on about the death of skateboarding and how Steve Berra eats babies. They get it. Here is the process numbered for you:

1) Think about what you want to skate.

2) Think of a place where it won't immediately get torn down. (for example, the bridge)

3) Get your head out of your ass and wake up before 2pm and build it.

4) Guard it with your life because the second you leave that sweet wet concrete it will have "Shaina Luvs Weed" written in it real big.

5) Tell people you built it and where it is so all can enjoy. What fun is having a spot you made if you can't let every 15 year old jerk with a VX he got for Hanukkah last year film his stupid generic fake good friends and post it all over youtube with hopes that if the "footy" is good enough he will someday not have to pay full price for boards off The Berrics?

If all of these steps are followed just right, you might even have the pleasure of hearing people trash talk about what you built without knowing it was you that did it. Nothing warms the heart like hearing a bunch of idiots that rove from skatepark to skatepark talking trash about whatever they are skating not possibly being as good as the stuff they never built.

Enjoy the bank. Enjoy the box. Enjoy the quarters. It is just skateboarding. And if you find someone who fixed a spot or built a bank or poured their hearts into making something for others to enjoy, or at least use, whether you hate it or love it, give them a pat on the back and say thanks. They deserve it and we need more skaters out there like that........ Thanks guys.

Saturday Approaching! The End is Nigh!

Lets get some business out of the way first. Tons of new product in. Do old Andrew a solid and come purchase it. I mean crap loads of stuff, including but not limited to those new Terri Cloth Instrument Hats. They are like Creature meets Kangol. When I put one on I dont know whether to start the Pop and Lock or try to wipe up a spill with my head. They are rad. As a matter of fact. First person to come in to the shop wearing a full vellore suit and buys one gets a free Instrument board. Both Drew and Ned are excluded from this contest. The hardest part for those dudes would be choosing what color to come in wearing. I would also hate to see Drew accidentally spill something on any of his wedding sweats. Keep em in the closet buds. Your day will come.

Lots of people have had their hand in building this huge weird obstacle that I am bringing to The Instrument Bash on Saturday. Think MC Escher hip. Come check this out. Some picked up screw guns. Some let us borrow tools. Some just drank a good portion of our building beer. All were appreciated. Thanks to everyone who helped me put this thing together or gave me input or told me I was an idiot. Special thanks to Derek, Calvert, Ali and Able Projects. Their tireless efforts to help me create and move everything I have ever dreamed up dont go unappreciated. Even if it turns out sucking, it will be there. At the very least, Kokomo can use it as a perch to stand on and yell "Hey white girl!" from. I can see that huge grin and shoelace belt now. Really how is it that someone can be on this earth for as long as old man kokomo has and still not have acquired a belt. Real big THANKS to Gary. I think Gary going to all the trouble involved in an event that involves a road closure, just so you can have a good time, is a testament to how he feels about skateboarding and the support he gets from real skateboarders. Instrument could not exist without you riding them. Skate shops can not exist without you going to them. Skaters make up the scene. It DOES matter what board you are riding and how you got it so chose wisely..... And dont cross the seal.... or the streams...... or the street in the middle of the block. Just go to the crosswalk and wait for the light. It doesnt take that long. Its safer. See you on Saturday.

You have written letters, posted in web forums, and even rallied in the streets. Habitat Shoes has finally answered the call. The Charter Boat Shoe has arrived. I have always felt like a boating enthusiast trapped in a skater’s body and now I have a functional way to feel like myself. From Kyle Berard to Erik Ellington, many skaters have tried to fulfill this dream by attempting the captain’s hat but to no avail. The ensemble just wasn’t complete. REJOICE. The time is now to get on board. Also……. New Lark mids in. Those are cool too I guess. If your not into looking like you boat for recreation like I do.

Not only is he a ripper but he is real good at paying people money to make him pants that he in turn sells to me then I in turn raise the prices slightly and sell to you. These will go fast. They are awesome. Kind of like Dickies but lighter. They kind of make you feel fast like a Dolphin. Not like a regular Dolphin but like a fast one. So if you want to try feeling like an intelligent mammal, stop in.

New obstacle for use with your skateboard!

Andrew McHue and company took some time out of their busy schedules of doing whatever you do in Dayton OH to build an obstacle at a place they live nowhere near for you to enjoy. You might hate it. You might love it. You might even love to hate it but none of that is the point. The point is that these dudes along with some of the locals (that are in desperate need of some haircuts) have done more for your "scene" then you have. And no, posting youtube videos of you and your friends doing fly outs does not count as helping out. Get motivated. Go out and build something in your neighborhood or backyard. Go out and build something in someone else's neighborhood or yard. Fix a spot. Go skate with someone you don't know. Quit watching your computer screen waiting to get instructions from Steve Berra on what is cool. Go be a part of something that is actually tangible. News flash..... You are not going Pro. But don't be too hard on yourself. Skateboarding opens up a lot of doors and opportunities that a lot of people don't get. Appreciate every day and make the most of it. Trust me when I say they go fast.

I really can't stand product posts, but when the product is good it makes things a little easier I think. New Instrument Tie-Dyes $20. These will go fast. They are rad. New Alien Workshop boards in stock along with the Quest Black Habitat shoe. Some other odds and ends soft goods in as well.

In skate news....... if you have not skated the new ledge under the bridge yet you are kind of blowing it. One side is granite. Real awesome. Also just skated the new Centerville park today near Dayton. All glorious transition. While we are on the subject of that park let's clear a couple of things up just in case you did not know. Skating transition of any kind is not skating "vert". Please only use the term vert when actually talking about transition that goes to vert. Secondly.... Just because a kid is on a bike does not mean he/she is a biker. Stop confusing kids on bikes with bikers. As much as it sucks to get hit by a guy on a bike, they (bikers) are not usually the enemy at the park. It's the dude in denim shorts that's on the mountain bike he pulled from his mom's garage that will be the one to watch out for. New Ways to Hurt Yourself

Just built a couple of new things under the bridge. The parking block curb and the pole jam only cost about $40 in materials. A little bit goes a long way if you would like to help. If you use the park on a regular basis come donate a couple of bucks at the shop. We are currently in money raising mode for some upcoming projects.

This whole project is built by skaters for skaters. If we don't protect what is ours, no one else will. If you see someone under the bridge and they have no reason to be there ask them to leave. No bikes under any circumstances on the mini ramp. If someone is doing damage, say something. I have a feeling that the people doing the most damage down there are not skaters and have no real business being there anyway. The weather is beautiful. Enjoy!

If anyone knew how much I get yelled at by people for not updating this blog regularly. I am terrible at it. And this issue also pushes into all other forms of communication as well. I don't answer my phone or check my voicemail. I very rarely respond to emails and my facebook page is a joke. I guess I like to think of myself as more of a renaissance man, more tuned to the finer things in life including but not limited to actual human interaction. So down to business:

NEW SHOES IN!!. Getting a mess of boards in today too. Really we get new stuff in about once a week this time of year. Also, no additional charge for special orders.

The weather has been great. Due to this and because of my already busy schedule you might not see me in the shop when you come in. Kokomo Joe is in town and helping out around here. Jap's elbow is broke but on the mend so he will be behind the counter a bit, and of course our employee of the month Scotty "Too Hotty" Licardi. Please bear with these guys. They are not the brightest bulbs in the drawer. Also getting ready to start a new project under the bridge and in some need of some fundage so come on down and maybe donate a dollar to the cause. Concrete is not that cheap when you're broke. We might even let you skate what we build.

In standard Galaxie fashion I have failed to try to promote something until last minute. Tomorrow (Sunday) Instrument Skateboards in conjunction with Galaxie Skateshop will be having a barbecue from 3 to 8 under the 471 bridge behind Newport High School. Rain or Shine come get some licks in on the ramp. Food and beverages on a first come first serve basis. The sun has put us all in a good mood. The ramp is dry and mostly resurfaced. Lets have a good time.Oh..... and the shop will be closed. Sorry for any inconvenience. You can file a formal complaint with management under the bridge tomorrow.

Learning Time!

A little history lesson today: Like most of our graphics, the name for The Galaxie Skateshop was ripped off. The adult entertainment club a few doors down known to most as the Brass Ass has gone through a lot of changes over the years, not the least of which has been its collection of awesome names - Frolics, Club Bongo and The Silver Slipper, to name a few.
The Galaxie Club, as it came to be known in 1964, was a fairly happening place until being ravaged by fire in 1970. The club was rebuilt and kept open for a few more years until becoming the Brass Ass in 1975. Why would we name a skateshop after a defunct strip club? Because it's part of this area's history and we liked it.
Just in case you're interested, here is a little extra reading about the club's history. For those of you who have been in there, check out how classy it used to look. I can’t get over it.

Just wanted to say Happy New Year and thanks. Thanks to all of you who support the shop and the things that we do. A skateshop can not survive without the most important part of the equation - skateboarders.

A skateshop should be more than just a place that sells you things or only interacts with you when new product is in. No matter what shop you go to or what website you order from, ask yourself “How are they helping me do the things I enjoy doing?” I don’t know the last time I have ever heard of a mail order site giving a deal when a skater needed it, throwing a premier for your buddy's video or building a spot in your hometown. Skateshops need skaters, and some might not realize it but skaters need shops. Support the people that support you and Cheers to 2010. Get out and skate... maybe not right now, it's really cold. I guess if you have to though, bundle up. 90% of your body heat is lost through your feet and your head. Maybe two pairs of socks and a hat. At least.

New Stuff plus Event OCT 11

I probably get about a shipment of new stuff in a week. Don't be afraid to come in and check it out. I definitely don't put everything on the website. Since my last post I have gotten orders from Alien and Deluxe and plenty more stuff through distribution.

Galaxie Coaches Jackets - only 10 made - these will probably go fast. Also look out for Galaxie hoodies and some other stuff in the near future. We even have a male model. Ryan Vail is not much on the conversation, but he's pretty in the face. Here are a few pictures.

Also on Sunday the 11th, the city of Newport will be shutting down the street in front of the shop for some health event. We will be setting up some boxes to skate from 2 to 5. The business next door will be grilling corn (wait until you taste it) and there will be some different stuff going on up and down the street. If you are in the neighborhood you should stop by.
